RESUMO Este artigo é uma reflexão sobre o artista na Modernidade. As fontes para esta narrativa são do acervo do músico Paurillo Barroso, sua produção musical e a relação destas com as periódicos do período que vai de 1915 à 1968, além de entrevistas com pessoas que conviveram com o músico. A análise do material revela uma intrínseca relação entre a experiência e a música e explicita alguns aspectos que podem ser denotativos da música urbana mais contingente, que são: o musico empreendedor, mistura cultural, e as novas formas de fruição artística estabelecidas sobre o entretenimento. Como suporte a esta reflexão nos apoiamos em Kracauer e Benjamim.

ABSTRACT This article reflects the artist's experience in Modernity. The sources for this narrative are the Paurillo Barroso collection, his musical production and the hemerographic sources of the period that goes from 1915 to 1968. The analysis of the material reveals an intrinsic relation between the experience and the music and it explains some aspects that can be denotative of the contingent urban music, like: the enterprising artist, the cultural mix, and the new forms of artistic enjoyment like the entertainment. In support of this reflection we use de concept of modernity from Kracauer and Benjamim.
